Down The Lake (1 min read)

‘You see this picture…it looks heavenly,’ she had said pointing at the laminated photograph hanging on the wall, ‘will you take me there?’

I laughed my head off at her innocent words before saying, ‘you’ve loved a poor boy, sweetheart, he can only take you on a boat ride on the nearby lake.’

That was thirty five years ago; I was 19, she was 16 – one madly-in-love couple we were; over the years this poor man has managed to save some money to make his wife’s dream of travelling to a foreign country come true; exhilarated, I go to her, but she refuses; smiling, she asks,

‘would you still be able to row me across the nearby lake, my old man?’
