What is independence? – the ability to do what you feel is right.
But what is right? – well, you can’t decide it for yourself, it is defined as something which doesn’t seem wrong to others. Take honor killing as an example – choosing your life partner yourself is a sin, it’s a crime but killing isn’t.
I proudly call myself independent – after all I earn my living, I don’t depend on others et cetera et cetera. But last week I had to catch an early morning flight and I was to start at 2 in the morning. All of a sudden, I started feeling unsafe. What if the cab driver…? What if the bus driver…? Or what if some random drunk guy on the road…see I can’t even dare to complete the sentences.
The next day I was asked a question – why did you book an early morning flight in the first place? You’re a girl after all!!!!
I laughed it off, but it gave rise to a question – should we call ourselves independent?
70 years down the line…we’re still struggling, huh?
Anyway, it was not meant to hurt anybody’s feelings. So enjoy your day and thanks for stopping by.
Did you catch the early morning flight? I hope the trip to the airport was stress free though I’d be happier now if I thought a friend drove you. You have the right to take these decisions, the right to be worry free whatever you choose to do.The patriarchal society robs you of your independence and ability to cope alone should anything happen to your father.
Those things that take away your right to fall in love and marry for love are all outmoded in an age where women earn a living thinking for themselves. Honour killings are not honourable, they are just a way to retain control and take revenge.Girls are better able to look after themselves than ever before. It’s wrong that fathers/brothers should feel they have the right to control the life of an educated woman as they did when girls were confined to the home and had no education.. It’s time for change.

Yes it is! But I don’t know if we’ll ever be truly independent. I always go into the world looking over my shoulder. We’ve come a long way, but so much farther to go. Great observations!

It is high time things changed around here.
Though what the people had when they are united during the freedom struggle isn’t quite there these days. We are all united and have a big voice, online. It is a step forward, but on the ground level there is no much change. We talk, we write, we post on social media, we go to candle light marches and whatnot. At the end of the day, they very change we expect to see, isn’t there.
Well, aren’t we all the faded voice of change that we expect to see?

You need not be apologetic about hurting anyone’s feelings. Reality faces us squarely in the face.

So true. In an independent country like India still girls are not yet independent emotionally. Very well written. ๐

Huummm ๐๐ณ๐๐ Sometimes one could feel it’s better to close one’s mouth and not bother with this world anymore ๐ Anyways write on, writers are tomorrow’s change. Just think of the good you are doing for your future daughter because the truth of the matter is, we might not live to see that change, but does that mean we should keep quiet about it? I don’t think so. Great and eye-opening post ๐๐

There was a point Sree when on being good things like be home by 9 or before it gets dark and girls are not safe used to annoy me and I used to counter men women are alike now. But, sadly over the years the conditions have changed in India changing my mindset over the past seven years. Women aren’t safe is a fact now not a belief and more unfortunate is the fact that even after a crime is committed, the criminal doesn’t even get punished properly and the victim is victimised further and the incidence just becomes a part of sau khabar me ek khabar. Cows are more safe than women. In fear of beef people are beaten to death but someone who molests a 9 year kid is let free to molest more. Just be safe.
Have a great day ahead !!
