12 in the night( 2 min read)

The clock struck 12. Stopping the alarm, I jumped out of my bed. I walked to the window and pulled the curtains. They’re calling me…he must be waiting…, I pondered, looking through the window at the big banyan tree behind our Bungalow.

I slipped into a long flowy white gown, spritzed some fragrance behind my ears; opening the back door, I walked to the tree and sat on the bench under it. I knew he was around. I could smell him. All I had to do was close my eyes and give in to them, the beautiful magical creatures of the night.

I didn’t realize how long it’d been, suddenly a voice startled me; it was him. I slowly opened my eyes and turned my head to the left.

These eyes never failed to enrapture me; the sea green shade, the deep brown circle around the eyeball and the twinkles made me wonder if there was a whole new universe on the other side of it. His light brown lips were curved into a mischievous smile. He too was dressed in white today.

Touching my hand, he whispered into my ear, ‘I was waiting for you…we all were…’

My cheeks flushed red and I looked away; the entire garden was illuminated by the sparkling fireflies, the glowing yellowish birds were chirping a soft music, sitting on a branch above us; some were flying from one tree to another; the swans were floating in the pond surrounding the orange reflection of the Moon.

Turning to him, I gazed deep into his eyes – ‘are you real?’

He smiled faintly.

‘Do I imagine all this?’

He remained silent.

‘I never talk about you with my friends…deep down I know you’re…’ my eyes dropped and heart ached.

His eyes gleamed, leaning over he kissed my forehead – ‘You’re chosen by us, creatures of the night…not everybody can see us, not everybody is invited into our world. Do I ever ask you if you’re real? I don’t because as long as I can see you, touch you, it doesn’t matter.’

‘Why did you choose me?’

‘I fell for you…even though the night and day never merge into each other, they always follow each other. Their love is never talked about…because they’re never seen together. But during dawn and dusk, the universe celebrates their togetherness.’

I placed my head on his shoulder.

I didn’t realize how long it’d been, suddenly felt the first rays of sunlight beaming down upon my face.

He was gone, so was all creatures of the night.
